Call for Papers – Europe in Movement(s). Genoa 2001 and Transnational Mobilisations in Historical Perspective (Trento, 19–20 November 2026)

We are pleased to circulate the Call for Papers for the conference “Europe in Movement(s). Genoa 2001 and Transnational Mobilisations in Historical Perspective”, organised by the Italian-German Historical Institute of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) and to be held in Trento on 19–20 November 2026.

The conference examines the protests surrounding the G8 summit in Genoa (19–22 July 2001) as a key moment in the history of social movements in Europe and as a laboratory for understanding relations between movements, states and supranational bodies at the turn of the twenty-first century. It also explores the broader transnational and European dimensions of the Global Justice and alter-globalisation movements, including networks such as Attac, the Genoa Social Forum, Indymedia, and the World and European Social Forums, and their legacies for later mobilisations against war, austerity, climate change and in defence of migrants’ rights.

Proposals are invited from scholars in history and related disciplines on themes including: cycles and geographies of protest; relations between state, law and security; and subjectivities, media and memories of conflict.

Interested scholars are asked to submit:

  • an abstract (400–500 words, in English or Italian), including title, research question and theoretical framework, sources and methodology, and main expected results;
  • a short CV (max. 2 pages) with institutional affiliation, main relevant publications and email address.

Applications (as a single PDF) should be sent to europeinmovements@fbk.eu by 2 March 2026, 12:00 (noon) CET. A total of nine conference grants (up to €300 each) will be available as reimbursement for travel and accommodation costs; meals during the conference will be covered by the organisers. Selected contributions will be considered for publication in an edited volume in one of the Italian-German Historical Institute’s peer-reviewed book series.
