Call for Papers – Global Bertolucci workshop, University of Cambridge, 6 March 2026
On behalf of the organisers, we are pleased to share the Call for Papers for the workshop Global Bertolucci, which will take place at the University of Cambridge on 6 March 2026.
The workshop aims to explore the global dimensions of Bernardo Bertolucci’s cinema and life, focusing on his sustained engagement with different cultures and contexts across Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia, Africa and the United States. Approaching Bertolucci from a global perspective, contributors are invited to reflect on issues such as movement, centre/periphery dynamics, cosmopolitan curiosity and the tensions between local roots and transnational trajectories, as well as to address questions of essentialised or orientalist gazes in his work. The event will also include a screening of the short film Il Canale (1965).
Abstracts of no more than 300 words for 20-minute papers, together with a short bio (max. 150 words), should be sent to Luca Peretti (lp716@cam.ac.uk) and Carlo Ugolotti (carlo.ugolotti@unipr.it) by 5 December 2025. Participants will be notified by 12 December 2025.
The workshop is convened by Luca Peretti (University of Cambridge), Sara Martin (Università di Parma) and Carlo Ugolotti (Università di Parma), with the support of the Italian Section of the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics (Cambridge), Cambridge Film and Screen, Dipartimento di Discipline Umanistiche, Sociali e delle Imprese Culturali (Parma), Fondazione Bernardo Bertolucci, and funded by the Cambridge Intesa Sanpaolo Fund.
